Firefox 4 Snags About 5 Million Downloads In 24 Hrs

Surpassing the 2.35 million obtained by Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4 seems to have had a successful debut, going past the five million milestone since debuting Tuesday.    Wednesday, March 23, 2011:  Mozilla Firefox 4, which was launched yesterday, has already taken 1.95 per cent of the worldwide Internet browser market, according to StatCounter, the free website analytics company. The firm's research arm StatCounter Global Stats reports that on the first day of its release Firefox 4 scored higher globally than Microsoft's new Internet Explorer 9 which was launched more than a week ago. Firefox 4 has really hit the ground running and has eclipsed the launch of IE 9," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. "Although IE 9 has undoubtedly been hampered by its lack of compatibility with Windows XP." By yesterday IE 9 had taken just 0.87 per cent of the worldwide market. When all versions of each browser are taken into account, Internet Explorer still leads the global market with 45 per cent followed by Firefox with 30 per cent and Chrome with 17 per cent. In the US, IE (all versions combined) leads the market with 48 per cent followed by Firefox on 26 per cent and Chrome on 14 per cent. On a monthly basis, StatCounter figures show a steady decline in the IE global market share from 55 per cent in February last year to 45 per cent this year. In the same time frame Google's Chrome has risen steadily from 7 per cent worldwide to 17 per cent. StatCounter recently reported that Firefox overtook Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) to become the number one browser in Europe for the first time in December 2010. StatCounter Global Stats are based on aggregate data collected on a sample exceeding 15 billion page views per month (4 billion from the US) from the StatCounter network of more than three million websites.

10 ways to make your web site more accessible

Assessing the accessibility of hundreds of web sites around the world has allowed researchers in Hungary to figure out ten of the most important improvements and modifications webmasters can make to improve the accessibility of their sites to people with disabilities or special needss. The team looked at 500 sites in 18 countries were tested with XValid in all. They were then able to analyze the data they accrued and to work out ten minimal guidelines for making web sites more accessible to everyone. The researchers suggest that the issue of ensuring equitable access for all regarding age and ability will become increasingly important as we become increasingly dependent on the world wide web as a source of information and knowledge.

The team suggests that the following ten guidelines would improve accessibility to more than half of the sites tested at low cost and with a very low barrier to implementation. Many of the points simply allude to good html coding others are more specific to improving accessibility:

1 Provide alternative short text for all non-text elements (such as images), if one is unable to write a short description, then use a longer piece of text rather than nothing.

2 Use relative positioning, rather than absolute so that different types of browser for different needs can cope.

3 The content of the site must be fully accessible without the need to use a mouse (the rendering of content should not depend on JavaScript event handlers/modal windows or other mouse-driven events.

4 Use the <label> tag to define the form of different elements, or least a minimum use the title attribute.

5 The text of references has to be intelligible beyond its context in the page.

6 The primary language must be defined in the <html> tag using the langattribute.

7 A web site should provide summaries for tables using the summary attribute within the <table> tag.

8 Separating characters must be used between hyperlinks.

9 The <title> tag must identify the subject of the web page correctly.

10 All html should be validated and html tags closed correctly, so that assistive technologies can parse the content accurately without manual intervention or correction.

Connect with your website visitors on Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox

One of our lesser known but very useful products is the Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox. With a copy and paste of some code, you can embed a chat window into your website, blog or social networking page. Then when visitors come to your page, they can see when you’re online and initiate a private IM conversation with you.

My friend Jim has a Pingbox on his neighborhood blog. While he’s on Yahoo! Messenger all day, his status says “Available” in his Pingbox. When visitors come to his site, he can see the counter change next to the Pingbox in his contact list. If someone wants to chat with him, they simply start typing in the Pingbox on the website, which in turn opens up a new IM conversation for Jim. His visitors can remain anonymous or give themselves a nickname while they chat.

One of the greatest things about Pingbox is that there is no need for anyone to know your Yahoo! ID or for you to know theirs. In fact visitors to your site don’t even need a Yahoo! ID to start chatting with you. You can also turn your Pingbox on or off right from your Yahoo! Messenger 10 contact list, so if you find you’re being interrupted too often by chatty visitors, you can go dark for awhile.

Jim says one of the things he really likes is that when he hovers on the Pingbox visitors in his contact list, it will show him what page on his site that visitor is on. But mostly he likes to see the number of people that are passing through his site all day and be available to them. He says he’s gotten some good tips about neighborhood stories from his Pingbox chats.

If you have your own blog, website or social networking page, it’s easy to add a Pingbox.Just visit the Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox Studio and click the “Create a Pingbox” button. You can customize your background, text size, display name, and whether or not you want to show your display image. You can even put in a custom message that users will see in the Pingbox when you’re online, or when you’re offline. Once you’re done, you’ll receive some code that you can copy and paste into your site.

Then just login to Yahoo! Messenger using the same Yahoo! ID under which you created your Pingbox and voila – you’ll see a new group in your contact list and if you have visitors, a count next to the group name. Note that in order to appear online and receive messages from your Pingbox, you need to be signed in to Yahoo! Messenger 10 or Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. However unlike version 10, the Mac version does not display your Pingbox visitors in your contact list.

Lets assume that only 40 of them are suitable for your web content. You can submit to 5 categories on each website, so that's 200 links to your website for each page you submit. So, say your 20 pages are submitted to 5 categories on 40 websites, that's a grand total of 4,000 one way links to your website. Just imagine the lovely Google juice you will get with this type of exposure. Provided you have optimized your website properly as well as doing all this, you will see your website whizzing up to the top of Google, Yahoo and Bing in next to no time.
